So today we went and looked for noodles at the HT Oaktree on 100th & Aurora in Seattle. Found these new Indonesian noodles! Sweet! Kari translates to curry!!!

Nice to be greeted by so many packets! From left to right we have dry powder seasoning, chili powder, fried onions and then the seasoned oil. This is where the curry taste lie as it smelled so nice.

Wow now that looks crazy! I expected these noodles to be like Mi Goreng stuff from Indomie but it is definitely not the same. This one has a broth!

Sweet! Two days in a row of Indonesian delicacy! Today we have one with mention of Sambal in the title. Sambal equals spicy! Should be good!

Okay so clockwise from the top left we have the delicious fried onions that will be sprinkled on the finished product, dry powdered seasoning known as bumbu, a thick sweet black soy sauce called kecap manis, a chili sauce which usually is manis pedas but I think is where the sambal seasoning is contained, and finally some seasoned oil.

Some crazy looking stuff here! The seasoned oil is the opaque on top top left, then the chili sauce and then the soy sauce with the powder bumbu at the bottom.

This is what I was expecting yesterday – noodles are cooked and then drained and stirred on a bowl with the seasonings. So yeah this is some great stuff! Some spiciness going on that’s for sure! Yup – another new bowl. From the way this stuff smells, it’s gonna be good!

Something new from Indonesia? Sure why not. The front mentions extra delicious fresh lime as an ingredient – sounds good to me!

The packet on the left has the powdered seasoning and tchili powder and the one on the right has seasoned oil.

Looks good to me – one thing I noticed was that the seasoned oil had a very nice lime scent to it.

This is something quite new to me – after cooking the noodles and the whole shbang is done, you sprinkle this stuff on top. I tasted it but not sure what it is.

The tasty powder apparently is from a plant. What plant? That’s a secret. Oh come on!!! Nope. Secret plant, dude.

The broth has quite a lime flavor to it and quite a spiciness that went well since I used all of the chili powder. The added ‘tasty powder’ has this indescribable depth to it – almost a woody taste. It was very different. All said and done I liked this one quite a bit. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

So the noodles are okay – actually slightly lesser quality in my opinion than Indomie but just slightly. The flavor of the noodles is excellent – a little spicy and a bit less sweet than Indomie’s. The onions are awesome – crispy and perfectly cooked. So no, it isn’t Indomie; it’s Mie Sedaap, and it’s

really quite good. It’s tough not making it a comparison kind of thing since I’m such a big fan of Indomie’s products. This will do in a pinch though and it is quite excellent. 4.75 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

Yesterday I went to HT Oaktree Market on 100th & Aurora in North Seattle. I went to get some things to make a batch of my curry soup and of course hit up the noodle aisle. Was thinking of re-reviewing the Mi Sedaap curry I’d had before as well, but as it turns out, I snagged a new one I hadn’t reviewed yet. Then this morning, I noticed a lot of people coming to The Ramen Rater from a forum on a Singapore website – they were all coming because of a link to Mi Sedaap Perisa Asli, something I’d reviewed a while back. I thought I should review a new Mi Sedaap today, so here we go.

From left to right, a packet of seasoned oil, a packet of curry powder, and finally a combo packet of seasoning powder and chili powder.

That darker brown powder close to the top is the curry. Well, the instructions say that you’re supposed to add that on top at the end – my bad… Kind of weird how it says to add all ingredients and then at the end says to add that. Would’ve thought curry would be a key ingredient in chicken curry noodles. But I digress.

Number 10 – Singapore – Koka Instant Non-Fried Noodles Spicy Black Pepper Flavour

This stuff is amazing; it contains a block of instant noodles that are exceedingly light and very low in fat. This doesn’t end up with low in taste though, especially with its garnish pack’s mention that the veggies in there vary depending on the season of production! It has a nice peppery taste and a little heat but not overwhelmingly so. This is a real treat and goes great with eggs. Original Review

Number 9 – Hong Kong – Doll Instant Noodle Artificial Chicken Flavour

Yeah I know – chicken instant noodles. How boring! Not this one – the broth is very good – it warms one’s innards on a cold day like nothing else. This is especially good with an egg or two added with about 45 seconds remaining as it cooks in the pot – makes the broth even heartier. A very relaxing bowl of noodles. Original Review

Number 8 – Japan – Sapporo Ichiban Shio Ramen Japanese Style Noodles

This is a very recent addition to the Top Ten list. Having tried Shio instant noodle varieties in the past, I had a feeling this would be a good one, and it truly was. The noodles were very hearty and the broth had an almost buttery flavor. I found this one very good with some baked chicken, green onions and hard boiled egg. Comes with a little packet of sesame seeds! Original Review
 

Number 7 – Korea – Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Premium Noodle Soup

Twenty years after the introduction of the well-known Shin Ramyun, Nong Shim brought out Shin Ramyun Black. A huge block of noodles, a veggie packet that also has freeze dried beef, red spicy seasoning and onion and oxtail soup packets make this a culinary onslaught of epic proportion. This was best enjoyed using a recipe from Eat Your Kimchi’s site which involved adding an egg, bok choy and a single slice of processed cheese. The beef pieces spring to life and the whole thing is excellent. Original Review

Number 6 – Japan – Myojo Hyoubanya no Chukasoba Japanese Style Noodles Oriental Flavor

A very good, very traditional instant noodle from Japan. Noodles are a little chewy and the broth has hints of seafood. Was enjoyable with a couple eggs cooked with the noodles and a little baked chicken with salt and pepper. Original Review

Number 5 – Indonesia – Mie Sedaap Instant Kari Spesial Bumbu Kari Kental

Like spicy? Like curry? This one from Indonesia fills both criteria and then some. The noodles are good but the real star here is the broth; a bit greasy and so flavorful. Not only a hot curry taste but had sweetness as well. Was excellent with a couple fried eggs. Original Review

Number 4 – Japan – Sapporo Ichiban Japanese Style Noodles Chow Mein

This stuff is great. It’s cooked with a small amount of water as the noodles gobble it all up. The flavor is sweet and salty and pure enjoyable. What’s more is a packet of ground seaweed is included which makes it all the more enjoyable. Goes well with a little bit of roast beef and some chopped onions. Original Review

Number 3 – Japan – Nissin Yakisoba – with Mayonnaise / Mustard Packet

Yakisoba is a very commonly enjoyed dish in Japan – and this variety puts a unique twist on it. You fill the box with boiling water and then afterwards, there’s a little drain spout to get rid of excess water. Add the flavoring and stir – then comes the fun as there’s a little packet that dispenses mayonnaise out of one reservoir and mustard out of the other! This is quite good – especially the vegetables. Nothing to add to this one – enjoy in its native state! Original Review

 Number 2 – Indonesia – Indomie Mi Goreng Rasa Ayam Panggang Jumbo Barbecue Chicken Flavour Fried Instant Noodles

First off, it’s a jumbo pack, which is helpful as this is such a great tasting package of instant noodles. Second, it comes with a whopping five seasonings – from sweet soy sauce to spicy chili sauce. The noodles are served drained without a broth. The flavorings in concert with a couple fried eggs, some pickled ginger and fried shallots make this one not to miss. Original Review

Truly the best instant noodles I’ve ever had. I love these – the noodles are flat and very tasty. The seasonings provide a broad range of flavors. Spicy, sweet, full of good flavor. When I was very young, I first discovered a satay variety of Indonesian mi goreng and loved it. I would go on special trips to Seattle just to get tons of it! The many seasoning sachets, oils, and the exotic flavors – it was great! I have been very fortunate to be able to try many, many more varieties of Indonesia instant noodles. I think what makes them distinctly different from others in the world are the use of sweetness and spiciness. These flavors balance so well in mi goreng. Then there’s flavors like lime, hot chillies and the crunch of fried onion. Reviewing such exotic varieties are what makes being The Ramen Rater so enjoyable! I’ll be honest – I haven’t had great luck enjoying green noodles in the past! With every rule however, there’s an exception. The slightly wider and flat noodles had a great texture and flavor. The broth was very enjoyable and hearty. Original review here

#6: ABC Selera Pedas Mi Rebus Hot Gulai Chicken Flavour

#5: SuperMi Gobang Goreng Rasa Ayam Bawang

The flavor is great – definitely has an onion chicken flavor and also a lot of sweetness, no doubt from the sweet soy sauce. The chili sauce that came with it also supplies a nice amount of heat. There’s a ton of fried onion to add on top at the end for a nice crunch. Original review here

Of all the questions I’ve received as The Ramen Rater, people have asked where they can get the version of this sold in the USA more than anything else. Unfortunately, it’s not sold here anymore – the folks in Indonesia are quite lucky! The noodles in this one are very nice – flat and a little broader than the others in this list and with an excellent flavor. If on a desert island and only able to pick one variety to have with me, this one would come to mind. Original review here

It’s been really hard to find new varieties from Indonesia lately and I was really stoked to find a total of four of them the other day! I always try to keep things mixed up – reviewing a different product from a different country every day if possible. It can be tough sometimes but lately I’ve been ending up with quite a range of varieties which is great. Anyways, let’s check out this one from Indonesia!

Add in the vegetables sachet and fill to line with boiling water and let steep covered for 4 minutes. Poke holes in the lid and use to drain off water. Add in contents of remaining sachets except fried onions. Stir well and then garnish with fried onion. Enjoy!

It’s been really nice having some Indonesian varieties to review again! Seemed like it almost went a whole year without any until recently! This one might confuse Westerners that see it on the shelf so I’ll help you out. Let’s break down Mi Kuah Rasa Soto. It directly translates to noodle soup, soto flavor. Now, soto is a popular Indonesian soup and seems to usually have a lime aspect to it which is very nice. This cup has a lot of stuff going on inside – let’s walk through it.

Here’s detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add in all sachet contents and fill to line with boiling water (300ml). Cover and let steep for 4 minutes. Stir thoroughly and enjoy!

The quantity was very good. The broth is just wonderful – a lime hit, lots of flavor and a good oiliness. The little meatballs hydrated well and the vegetable bits were good as well. Sweet! An Indonesian variety I’ve not tried! I wish there were more that I could get around here. I rarely get any from Indonesia – one reader sent a couple of packages a while back full of all sorts of wonderful varieties – maybe someone will again? I hope so! Let’s check out this one from Mie Sedaap.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, boil noodle in 400ml water for 3 minutes. Add seasonings to a bowl while bolling. Add noodles and water to bowl and combine. Enjoy!

The last of the Mi Sedaap varieties I got quite a while ago at Asian Food Center down on Aurora and 130th. Let’s crack this one open – so few Indonesian varieties cross my desk these days!

Time for some mi goreng! So this is another one I found at the Uwajimaya in Renton, WA by where my son goes to Pokemon League. Today’s a weird day; the local power company has been going from apartment building to apartment building and repairing these big green power boxes outside. I’m guessing that the power could go out at any minute! I guess We’ll see – let’s get started!

The flavor is a kind of sweet and spicy barbecue chicken taste which was very good although a little sweeter than expected. Wow now that looks crazy! I expected these noodles to be like Mi Goreng stuff from Indomie but it is definitely not the same. This one has a broth!

Click image to enlarge. So here’s the finished result with a couple fried eggs tossed in. So this was really good – I expected something non soupy from Indonesia but this was just fine with me! A nice sweet curry flavor, a lovely color and flavor. I loved it – 4.5 out of 5.0 stars! Get it here.

Sweet! Two days in a row of Indonesian delicacy! Today we have one with mention of Sambal in the title. Sambal equals spicy! Should be good!

Okay so clockwise from the top left we have the delicious fried onions that will be sprinkled on the finished product, dry powdered seasoning known as bumbu, a thick sweet black soy sauce called kecap manis, a chili sauce which usually is manis pedas but I think is where the sambal seasoning is contained, and finally some seasoned oil.

Some crazy looking stuff here! The seasoned oil is the opaque on top top left, then the chili sauce and then the soy sauce with the powder bumbu at the bottom.

This is what I was expecting yesterday – noodles are cooked and then drained and stirred on a bowl with the seasonings. So yeah this is some great stuff! Some spiciness going on that’s for sure! Hey this looks shmancy! Nothing better than an interesting new pack of noodles from Indonesia.

A dual packet containing seasoned powder and chili powder as well as a seasoned oil packet.

Yup – another new bowl. From the way this stuff smells, it’s gonna be good!

The broth was pretty good too, although have had better  when it comes to chicken ramen. All in all not too bad but nothing really to cheer about. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

Something new from Indonesia? Sure why not. The front mentions extra delicious fresh lime as an ingredient – sounds good to me!

The packet on the left has the powdered seasoning and tchili powder and the one on the right has seasoned oil.

Looks good to me – one thing I noticed was that the seasoned oil had a very nice lime scent to it.

This is something quite new to me – after cooking the noodles and the whole shbang is done, you sprinkle this stuff on top. I tasted it but not sure what it is.

The tasty powder apparently is from a plant. What plant? That’s a secret. Oh come on!!! Nope. Secret plant, dude.

Click image to enlarge. I added a couple fried eggs, some fried shallot and some pickled ginger. The noodles are nice – firm and thin. The broth has quite a lime flavor to it and quite a spiciness that went well since I used all of the chili powder. The added ‘tasty powder’ has this indescribable depth to it – almost a woody taste. It was very different. All said and done I liked this one quite a bit. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

Yup – this stuff is good – can’t blame the kid for not wanting to share. He’s grubbin’ on the Mie Goreng (fried noodles) though.

This is Mi Goreng – made by Indomie’s chief competitor. Will it stack up to Indomie Mi Goreng? Let’s see – the battle begins!

So the noodles are okay – actually slightly lesser quality in my opinion than Indomie but just slightly. The flavor of the noodles is excellent – a little spicy and a bit less sweet than Indomie’s. The onions are awesome – crispy and perfectly cooked. So no, it isn’t Indomie; it’s Mie Sedaap, and it’s

really quite good. It’s tough not making it a comparison kind of thing since I’m such a big fan of Indomie’s products. This will do in a pinch though and it is quite excellent. 4.75 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.
